Vivegam is a misfire on many levels. It’s an attempt to make an “international” thriller, with the assumption that a star with a huge fan base would be able to pull it off. Ajith’s effort is sincere, but Vivegam just doesn’t come together.

Once the head of a counter-terrorism squad, AK is now most wanted by the intelligence agencies after his daring strike on a terrorist outfit gives him a hard drive containing codes to launch a nuclear weapon. Assembled to track him down are his former team mates, his friend Aryan Singha (Vivek Anand Oberoi), Mike (Serge Crozon), Rachael (Amila Terzimehic) and Shawn (Arav Chowdharry). Action is what Vivegam promises and it is what the film offers — bangs for every buck. And Ajith takes it upon himself to single handedly provide plenty of mass-hero moments.

Till interval point, Vivegam pretty much functions like an ordinary Tamil film based in an international milleu. There’s a blink and miss appearance from Akshara (which include a high octane chase sequence), and some bland comedy by Karunakaran. There’s a love story between AK and Yazhini (Kajal) that works, but director Siva seems more interested in the action pieces. He picks them up with “rage” in the second. The face-off between AK and his ‘nanba’ is the stuff of Rajinikanth’s Annamalai but here, the tension hardly hits you. And there’s the difficult milleu (the story is largely based in Europe) and overdose of international conspiracies (shadow governments, secret societies) to deal with

Kajal Aggarwal is good in a limited role that has an impact while Akshara Haasan does justice to her short but crucial appearance. Karunakaran is engaging as a translator who appears in the first half of the film. Ajith’s punch dialogues seem more an attempt to communicate with his fans rather than go with the story. He repeats the now-famous ‘Ulagame Onna Edhirthalum’ on two occasions; both scenes don’t warrant it. He takes a jibe at traitors and lauds friendship. He extols good thought (’Yennam Pol Un Vazhkai’).

Anirudh Ravichander’s music and background score is one of the major highlights of the film, along with some stunning visuals by cameraman Vetri. Mounted on a lavish scale, the entire film has been shot in Eastern Europe and the action scenes are well choreographed. A bike-chase scene featuring Ajith is adrenaline pumping and shot superbly

Vivegam is largely targeted at Ajith fans and the film collected 25 cores on first day and the lifetime collections will be more 250 cores
