‘Dhoom 3’ is one of the most
anticipated sequels in the year 2013, and the reason is Aamir Khan and The
third installment of the action franchise is a visual delight. The film also
has an emotional connect but critics say the film lacks imagination and is
showing signs of franchise fatigue. As far as Aamir Khan is concerned, he nails
it as a villain. Katrina makes an impressiveCritic's take: Abhishek Bachchan and
his leather jacket continue to share the same number of expressions they did
nine years ago, when the Dhoom franchise was launched.
Uday Chopra hasn't possibly
watched any of his own films still so is yet to retire Dhoom: 3 comprises bits
and bobs from several American films—its vengeful magician‘s premise echoesNow
You See Me, its scheming prestidigitator, interval-timed twist and emotional
undertow are from The Prestige, its anti-big bank stance inspired by The Dark
Knight Returns—but it’s mostly Bollywood baloney. The story is set,
embarrassingly, in Chicago, home to clueless Americans in general and unskilled
extras in particular.
Aamir Khan’s trapeze artist
Sahir has been repeatedly attacking the bank that had driven his magician
father (Jackie Shroff) to suicide and leaving behind clues—in Hindi. The back
story is well established by the writer and it delivers all the action and the
speed that the ‘Dhoom’ franchise promises. The stunts on the bike and even in
the circus scenes are very well made and shot. The technical team should also
be lauded for seamless special effects. All the action sequences, especially
the introduction scene and the climax are gripping and you wouldn’t even risk
blinking, just in case you miss something. It must be pointed out that though
the influence of the Hollywood is there in the movie, but the stunt direction
looks original and keeps the Bollywood masala intact. As every Dhoom fan will know, a thief must
have a unique identity. While John Abraham delivered pizza, Hrithik Roshan left
a symbol of ‘A’ at the scene of each robbery.
Aamir leaves behind a joker
mask and writes ‘Bank waalon, tumhaari aisi ki taisi‘ on the wall. With the
stolen money, Sahir manages to start up the circus once again. Since the thief
is an Indian, the Bombay Police is summoned and links are found between Iqbal’s
son Sahir’s involvement in the robbery. Will Jai (Abhishek Bachchan) and
Ali(Uday Chopra) will stop Sahir who is determined to seek revenge and destroy
the bank for life is the story of Dhoom:3.Uday Chopra’s Ali, one of the
recurring characters in the Dhoom franchise, perfectly embodies the new movie’s
attitude to locations, Caucasian actors and Hollywood-style action sequences.
Writer and director Vijay Krishna Acharya’s screenplay for Dhoom: 3 takes its
cue from the vagabond character’s wide-eyed wonderment at being in The Abroad,
his tendency to reduce everything to his intellectual level, and his gee-whiz
regard for his adversary’s fleeing skills.
And the performances add to
the package. There is no doubt that Aamir Khan plays a very convincing baddie,
but there is a big secret to his character which won’t be fun to reveal. So
let’s just talk less about his character. Sadly, Katrina Kaif doesn’t have a
strong role like Aishwarya Rai Bachchan did in Dhoom:2. Kat is in the film just
to add glamour and not much else, though she does look dazzling and is fabulous
with her dance and acrobatics. Abhishek Bachchan has always been good as Jai
Dixit and he continues to be do in Dhoom:3. Uday Chopra, like always, adds the
comic element and is good fun to watch, in small doses. Katrina Kaif’s trapeze
artist Aliya gets the worse treatment, virtually disappearing from the plot
after stripping down to her skivvies for her job interview. The movie’s real stars
are the various stunt doubles, dancers and trapeze artists, whose collective
energy occasionally lifts the film out of dross and towards something
approaching entertainment.
‘Dhoom 3’ manages to deliver
a typically Bollywood revenge saga in a modern way. The suspense and the
emotional quotient added to the speed and stunts make the movie as spectacular
as it promises to be. Acharya brings to the audience an enthralling script and
executes it equally well. The movie is sure to keep you hooked; go and watch it
for Aamir!
